Among the all Mathura temples, Krishna Janambhumi temple, built on the dungeon place of Mathura where Krishna is born is believed to be the temple of apex importance for every devotee. It is believed and found from excavations at the place that there used to be a dugeon at the place where temple is built. Ancient Keshav Dev temple is situated close to main Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, the birth place of Lord Krishna. Keshav Dev, which is one of the thousand names of Lord Krishna, is the deity of this ancient temple. Few years back, a new Keshav Dev temple has been built within the premises of Krishna Janmabhoomi due to which, the fame of old Keshav Dev temple is on the verge of extinction.
It is believed that Idgah (mosque) which is adjacent to main Krishna Janmabhoomi at present, was once used to be Keshav Dev temple. During Muslim rule in 1669, Aurangzeb demolished this temple and later built Idgah there. Subsequently, Maratha Scindia founded the present temple near Potra Kund as Keshav Dev temple. This temple is situated in a locality called Mallapura. This locality is named as Mallapura as Kans’ malley used to live here. Kans was Sri Krishna’s maternal uncle and the people who used to guard premises of Kans were known as Malla.
Located near the Yamuna Bank, temple of Dwakadeesh in Mathura is another temple which is dedicated to deity Krishna. The temple is managed by followers of Vallabhacarya and is known for its spectacular architecture. Janamashtmi is celebrated with immense enthusiasm here like in Janambhoomi temple, devotees totally drowned in the colours of Krishna Bhakti. Temple was built in 1814 and has a unique architecture that attracts tourists to this temple.
Generally, at the beginning of the rainy season, during the month of Shravan, a very elaborate swing festival takes place here. People from all across the country prefer to visit the place during the popular festivals like Holi, Dushera, Janmashtami and Diwali. This temple is close to Vishram Ghat and Gatashram Tila.
Among the twenty five ghats in Mathura Vishram ghat acquires predominant position. Customary circumambulation of all the holy spots in Mathura begins and ends here at Vishram Ghat. Since the entire city is embellished with the fabulous tales of lord Krishna, Vishram Ghat is not an exception. Legend says that it was here that the lord took rest after killing Kansa.
The Vishram Ghat is surrounded with handsome temples such as the Neelkantheshwar Temple, Mukut Temple, Radha-Damodar Temple, Yamuna-Krishna Temple, Langali Hanuman Temple Narasimha temples and Murli Manohar Temple. One of the haunting sights that should not be missed is the aarti at the Vishram Ghat in each evening. Small oil lamps that glide on the river set the docile water sparkling and the reflection of thousands of glistening lights on the sinuous brook set a marvelous spectacle.
